Details: Job Summary and MissionThis job contributes to Starbucks success by creating innovative hardware solutions that differentiate and provide profit through quality improvements. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principlesSummary of Key ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:- Gathers, analyzes and maintains product and technology trend information and conducts idea generation sessions to initiate creation of new food and beverage equipment. Designs and conducts benchtop experiments and tests, including equipment evaluations, Product Guidance testing recommendations, and in-market testing to deliver project requirements.- Conducts research and design experiments on coffee related equipment including but not limited to brewing, grinding, and water heating technologies. Experiments may be for investigation of a new technology or to better understand existing products. Narrows a multiple solution space to a single design through testing and iterative prototyping.- Communicates and gathers information from other business units to determine hardware and process gaps in the retail and consumer space. Analyzes and brainstorms on these gaps to determine the specific hardware need and solutions leading to IP creation. - Develops hardware designs through iterative prototyping including but not limited to fabrication and assembly of coffee equipment related sub systems, mechanisms, and full products. - Utilizes CAD software to design prototypes, mechanisms, sub systems, and all other coffee related hardware. Creates solid models, assemblies, and drawings with the understanding of mechanical design and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing. Communicates these models and drawings to suppliers and vendors to ensure proper fabrication and manufacturing. Develops inspection criteria for individual parts and drawings to be adhered to by suppliers. Audits fabricated parts for proper tolerance adherence and ensures mechanical design is properly communicated to supplier. -Guides products to commercialization through iterative prototyping, testing, regulatory approval, and manufacturing set up. Sets up and supports in-field testing during the iterative prototyping phase to better understand and help guide the design of the product from a form, fit, and functional level. Submits products to regulatory testing bodies, mitigates test failures through in-house testing and designing, and prepares products for approval and certification. Guides, consults, and/or designs manufacturing workstation jigs, fixtures, and assembly instructions when product is ready for production. - Gathers and maintains knowledge of manufacturing, prototyping, fabricating, and mechanical design technologies. Works with suppliers to understand the latest technologies in their field and how that could apply to coffee hardware design.-Interfaces with customer of finished products (facilities, operations, store development, etc) to give technical guidance and support. Maintains relationship with service user of products to better understand and eliminate design failures during use.
